- Mao Zedongs attempt to modernize China's economy
- By 1988 he wanted to have an economy that rivaled America's
- Mao wanted to reform two places in China, the industry and agriculture
- Mao announced a second five year plan to last from 1958 to 1963
- China was reformed into a series of communes
- There was also a redistribution of wealth
- In 1959 things started to go wrong, and communes were faced with tasks they were unable to achieve
- Quickly produced farm machinery fell to pieces
- The harvest in 1959 was 170 million tons of grain, well below what China needed at the most basic level
- Millions of people were left ill and starving
- By 1959 Mao admitted that his Great Leap Forward was a fail
